The journal

Most of the decisions that shape your life arrive without training. You pick a career, a city, a partner, a moment to leave — the big, course-setting ones — using roughly the same equipment you’d use to choose a restaurant. Nobody hands you a method. You weigh it in your head, sleep on it, ask a friend, and decide. Then you find out, sometimes years later, whether you decided well.

That gap — between how much these choices matter and how little help we get making them — is the whole reason this company exists.

We’re The Handbook Co. On the surface, we publish handbooks for the moments in life that matter: right now, the world of work — changing careers, job-hunting, interviews, coming back after a break. Practical, well-made, the kind of thing that reads like a book rather than a blog post. If that’s all you ever take from us, that’s fine; the books are built to stand on their own.

But the books are the surface. Underneath, we’re trying to answer one question, and we expect it to take years: what is actually true about how people make good decisions? Not in the abstract — in the specific, messy moments where a real person has to choose and the choice is hard to reverse. We think that question is badly served. There’s a shelf of pop-psychology that flatters you, a shelf of academic work that’s rigorous and unreadable, and very little that takes a real decision you’re facing and gives you something genuinely useful to do with it. We’d like to close that gap, carefully, in public.

How you build an answer to a question like that

You don’t start with the grand theory. You earn it.

The honest way to understand how decisions get made is the way a field scientist understands anything: you pick a real situation, go deep enough to learn what genuinely makes a decision hard there, and carry what you learn back into a slowly-growing picture of the whole. The situation is the field site. The understanding is what you build from many of them.

The world of work is our first field site. We started there for a plain reason: a lot of people are making career decisions right now, often badly, often alone — and a career choice is the kind you can study honestly, because people make versions of it repeatedly and live with the results. From there we’ll move outward, deliberately. And here’s a choice that matters more than it looks: we alternate between professional decisions and personal ones — work, then something like a major life event, then back. Not to spread our bets, but to keep ourselves honest. A theory that’s only ever been tested on career moves will quietly mould itself to career moves and call itself universal. Forcing it to also explain the decisions that are shared, one-shot, and emotional is how you find out whether it’s really true.

What we’ve found so far (and what we’ll keep finding)

We’re early, and we’ll say so. But a few things are already taking shape, and they’ll be the spine of this Substack.

Some are borrowed — the best of what people who’ve spent careers on this already know. That a vivid fear about a decision is usually a worse guide than the boring base rate of what actually happens to people who made it. That most decisions move through stages — noticing it’s a decision at all, shaping the options, choosing, committing, then living with it — and that we tend to skip the first and bungle the last. That precision is fragile: a confident-sounding number is often a rumour wearing a decimal point, and the honest move is to cut it.

Some we’re working out ourselves, and holding loosely. That career change, for instance, isn’t really a content problem — learning a new field from scratch — so much as a translation problem: carrying what you already have into a language the new field recognises. That’s a working hypothesis, not a law. We’ll test it, in the open, and tell you if it breaks.

The point is that none of this is settled, and we’re not going to pretend it is. The fun — and the trustworthiness — is in building it where you can watch.

The applied series is that thinking brought down to a decision you might be facing right now. We start where we started — work and career — and move outward as the company does.

When a piece can genuinely help you with a specific decision, we’ll point you to the handbook that goes deeper. But the writing earns its place on its own, every time — that’s the promise.
