The reading

"You did not stop being capable. You stopped being visible." The Return-to-Work Handbook puts its thesis in its first line and spends the rest of the book earning it. The reader has been away — parenting, caregiving, recovery from illness, military service, a deliberate sabbatical or study — and almost everything written for this moment, the book argues, gets it backwards: it treats the years away as a gap to apologise for, when "the gap is a label other people use; the work is yours to translate." The book holds all five faces of the return at once and writes a worked example for each, so the reader's own situation appears on the page in its own language rather than a neighbour's.

What distinguishes the argument is a structural constraint the book is honest about: the returner, alone among job seekers, does not get to choose when the hard part is revealed. "In most job searches the candidate decides how to sequence the story — lead with the strength, hold the complication for the interview. You do not have that option." The gap sits in the date column, near the top, and a recruiter's first orienting pass — a matter of seconds — lands on it before the credentials, before the case for fit. So the translation, the book insists, must do its work in the chronology itself, in a three-to-seven-word honest label with at most one anchoring bullet. The book's clearest sentence draws the line the whole method turns on:

Those are two different injuries, the book argues, and they heal differently — the self-image slowly, through being seen to work again; the candidacy not at all, because "it needs translating," not healing. It is a genuinely useful distinction, and it lets the book do the kindest thing it does: turn away from the feeling and toward the structure, handing the reader "somewhere to put their hands."

It is strongest where it converts unpaid years into nameable evidence without sentimentality. The mapping exercise — what capability did the time build, and what concrete thing demonstrates it — is disciplined in both directions: it refuses the apology and the exaggeration alike, because "a reader can smell both." Like its cousins it dismantles the functional resume as a tell, and like the Rebound book it provides an honest floor for the reader whose answer comes up empty — a ninety-day re-acquisition plan, because translating absence will fail at the interview.

Where is it narrow? It says so plainly. It is for the return after a deliberate or imposed break, and it routes the continuous-employment pivoter, the layoff-from-a-standing-start rebounder, and the internal mover to their own volumes — while naming the blurred edges honestly. The book makes few numerical claims and marks its working models as models. Readers wanting "just be confident, own your story" will be disappointed; the book calls that "a feeling and asks you to manufacture it," and offers a method instead.
